Halloween And Christmas Consumerism And Commercialisation In The UK

On social media a friend wrote:  Various comments followed:  I believed more required sharing and so I added this comment to the thread. We live in the UK with a consumer driven society and a commercialised culture, many people believe buying and using products and commodities, gives them an identity and meaning associated with a false sense of power.  TV, media and properganda brain wash us into believing we need these things.  Halloween originated from the Celts and was a festival to ward off evil spirits, but has quickly turned into something rather different. I personally hate the modern concept of trick or treating BC most people are handing out sweets and lollipops to young unsuspecting children in the midst of a global diabetes epidemic!  I only hand out apples and believe me the children are always happy to recieve an apple, amongst all the other sugary rubbish they are given. It has also become second nature for the TV networks to offer up endless horror movies to watch, and t

Silent Night Heated Throw Saving £ Keeping Warm

Silent Night Heated Throw I paid £40 for my Silent Night electric heated throw blanket & it's grey thermal & machine washable. One of the best things I've ever bought & a great way to save money.  I wrote to Silent Night to find out more about the amount of energy they use.  Silent Night informed me they use up to 100Watts or 0.1kW per hour.  At October 2022 Average electric *34p per kWh it costs about 1.1p per hour on Low. They have 3 different settings so that is about 33Watts on low, 67Watts on medium & 100Watts on high.  I have been using it over November & December & rarely use the high setting because it makes me very very hot very very fast.  I have happily saved a lot of money over the last 2 months & will continue to save over the winter.  My suggestion is to think about also buying a plug in timer, because then you can easily set the their to come on/off as you required, so you could set it to come on in half hour intervals so through the n

Cooking Appliances Calculating Cost Of Energy Use

Various types of cooking appliances exist! Determining if to buy a new different kind of cooking appliance can be difficult  So here I have done some calculations to help people work out what is cheaper.  My best bit of advice for people trying to reduce energy bills is to look at the actual kWh energy consumption of each device, know your appliance, know how it works, and how it works at its most efficent capacity by looking after it well.   In these calculations below I have used the average Oct 2022 electric rate of 34p per kWh, but these do still vary depending upon things like type of tariff, payment method used, type of meter, your supplier and region.  So always best to think in terms of the amount of energy being used in kWh! **Please note that an appliance might be 2kW and use 2kW of energy per hour, however if cooking with this 2kW appliance for 2 hours, it does not mean the appliace will use exactly 2kW x 2 hours = 4 hours.  This is because once it reaches the necessary cook

Reduced Electricity Use By 47.2% & Gas By 68.8% in Oct 2022

1st Nov bill 2021 Which is for whole of Oct to 1st Nov used  311.1kWh electric  913.9kWh gas  If I use the same this Oct 2022 at the new higher energy rates I expect to pay: £0.75 per day standing daily charges  31 days x £0.75 = £23.25  311kWh E x £0.35056 = £109.02 913kWh  G x £0.1033 = £94.31  Total £226.58  VAT 5%  = £237.91 However the Gov scheme will help with £66.  So if I use the same amount of energy I will pay approximately  £237.91 - £66 = £171.91  My actual 2022 Oct bill total cost me:  £107.19   Minus Gov Scheme £400 @£66 per month  £107.19 - £66 = £41.19  Compared to cost last year £117.49 .  Now look at the comparison in energy use this Oct to Nov 2022 compared to Oct to Nov in 2021!  MY BILL COST WAS LESS IN 2022 THAN 2021 THEN TAKE OFF THE GOV SCHEME OF £66 AND LOOK!  2021 £117.49  2022 £41.19 (*with Gov scheme £66) How?  I drastically cut my energy use in every way I could possibly think of! 2021 BILL Estimated annual usage  Gas 14,407kWh  Electric 3,734kWh Monthly us

Condensation, Damp, Mould Help!

Does your home a problem with condensation?  Measure Moisture In The Air Consider buying a Hygrometer that measures level of humidity in your room/home. This way you can assess the level of interaction required by yourself to combat it.  Moisture In The Home   Our property needs to breath too! Allowing for good ventilation and air movement regularly, helps to prevent condensation.  Condensation forms when warm moist air lands on cold surfaces like internal walls or Windows, if not managed this can lead to condensation damp.  To combat moisture in the air:  Produce less moisture  Dry laundry outdoor or with good ventilation  Let fresh air in & moist air out  Extractor fans use! Trickle vents use! Draft proofing  Insulation  Heat unused rooms from time to time If you see it forming on Windows either open them ajar, & if too cold to do this then wipe away excess moisture  Ensure large kitchen appliances have adequate ventilation, especially since fires in the home can be caused b

Is My Gas Use High Oct 2022 Help Calculate Use & Cost Rates

Image
Quick work out of usage from meter reading  To find out how many meter units used  New Meter Reading - Old Meter Reading = Meter Units Used  Most gas meters are in m3 units, some are in ft3.  Have a look on your actual meter to find out if it is in m3 or ft3.  If it is in m3, then next we convert m3 into kWh. If it is in ft3 scroll down the page to the next set of calculations.  kWh is kiloWatts per hour sometimes written like kW/h.  On your energy bill you will see your gas bill has a unit price for gas per kWh, and also a gas standing daily charge.   This is why we need to know our gas use in kWh.  This is why we convert from m3 or ft3 into kWh.  Once we know our number of gas kWh use we can calculate it by the unit price  BASIC & QUICK SUM FOR EST GAS COST Find Meter Units Used by taking your old meter reading away from your new meter reading New Meter Reading - Old Meter Reading = Meter Units Used     Gas meters are in m3 or ft3, so we convert this to kWh to calculate our cost.

Heat Yourself First Campaign & Keep Yourself Warm Ideal Temp

"Reduce your temp by 1° degree & you'll see a drop in your energy fee!"  Why don't households know about the ideal room temps?   About the safe temps & the unsafe temps?  Ideal 18°C for healthy well-dressed people - WHO. Whereas those who are elderly, immobile, vulnerable and who have serious medical conditions may be far more comfortable at 18°C to 21°C , often they need more warmth.  "Heat yourself first campaign!"   Extra clothing, layers, socks, slippers, hot water bottles (rechargeables are likely cheaper now than boiling a kettle). "Heat your space later, but not the whole place, just the room!" - use the TSVs on radiators to set temp in each room, as required, don't just leave them all on all of the time. Adjust them to your requirements, reduce energy waste.  TEMPERATURES THAT ARE TOO HOT 24°C AND ABOVE , AND TEMPERATURES THAT ARE TOO COLD BELOW 16°C ARE UNSAFE AND CAN BE A SERIOUS HEALTH RISK ESPECIALLY TO PEOPLE WHO ARE

TVs and Energy Consumption

TVs and Energy Consumption Recently I noticed my bedroom TV was 200W and my living room TV 100W, yet they are about the same size. However, the 100W TV is a newer more energy efficient model. So I thought I would have a look at the energy efficiency of TVs. To reduce energy use  Settings on most newer models can be set to an economical power saving mode & can be set to time off automatically, which is a great way to help save energy.   Screen size and screen resolution have an impact upon how much energy a TV uses.  For example  55" TV on average uses 77W.   32" TV on average uses 32W .  For example  4K 2160p TV typically uses over double the energy of full High Def 1080p TV.   Modern LED TVs are supposed to be the most energy efficient , which makes sense when we know LED light bulbs are energy efficient.   It seems like newer home appliances are becoming more energy efficient but it can sometimes be difficult trying to work out the energy use details.  Calculating
