Heat Yourself First Campaign & Keep Yourself Warm Ideal Temp

"Reduce your temp by 1° degree

& you'll see a drop in your energy fee!"

Why don't households know about the ideal room temps?

About the safe temps & the unsafe temps?

Ideal 18°C for healthy well-dressed people - WHO.

Whereas those who are elderly, immobile, vulnerable and who have serious medical conditions may be far more comfortable at 18°C to 21°C, often they need more warmth.

"Heat yourself first campaign!"

Extra clothing, layers, socks, slippers, hot water bottles (rechargeables are likely cheaper now than boiling a kettle).

"Heat your space later, but not the whole place, just the room!" - use the TSVs on radiators to set temp in each room, as required, don't just leave them all on all of the time. Adjust them to your requirements, reduce energy waste.

TEMPERATURES THAT ARE TOO HOT 24°C AND ABOVE, AND TEMPERATURES THAT ARE TOO COLD BELOW 16°C ARE UNSAFE AND CAN BE A SERIOUS HEALTH RISK ESPECIALLY TO PEOPLE WHO ARE ELDERLY, IMMOBILE OR WHO HAVE SERIOUS UNDERLYING MEDICAL CONDITIONS.

KEEP YOURSELF WARM!

Central Heating System

A few things to consider to ensure yours is working efficently and effectively.

Regular boiler maintenance

Ask boiler engineer to optimise your boiler settings, having the optimal flow temperature means your heating system will work more efficiently this can save you up to 12% on your heating bill

Bleeding radiators regularly to ensure they heat evenly

Add reflective foil behind radiators to reflect heat back into the room, especially if radiators are on external walls, reduces heat loss

If you have curtains above radiators do not let them hang over the radiator, maybe tuck them in behind to prevent heat loss

If radiators are under Windows thermal roller blinds fitted well, (most are easy to DIY) will reduce heat loss

Draft exclude around windows and external doors to reduce heat loss, by retaining as much of the heat energy in your home, means you can reduce the temperature of the heating thermostat and or reduce the length of time the heating is switched on for

Do not cover radiators

Do not dry washing on radiators

Clean behind them regularly

Pipes can be lagged insulated

Consider curtains on external doors

Space Heater

Infrared Heat Lamp Heater - One Person One Room

Use an energy efficient space heater they may initially appear as though they are expensive to run, if used correctly and efficently they will save you money on your Central heating bills. By using a small portable space heater in the room you are in, the central heating thermostat can be lowered. An infrared or heat lamp heater nearby can warm you up fast and effectively, the heat permeates directly at you, ideal for heating one person in a room. Infrared heaters do not lower the humidity or oxygen in the room, so they do not dry out the air. They do not add any pollutants to the air and they are not toxic. They work better in direct sunlight compared to shade.

Safety around children and pets is essential since they can get very hot. Newer models are being designed to be safer, always check safety instructions.

They work best when directed at you, so not ideal type of heater for heating a room with many people.

They feature instant on off heat.

They can be bought relatively cheaply and can use as low as 300W. I recently bought one from B&M for about £20 and it has 3 settings of 400W, 800W and 1200W.

My plan is to use this heater when it's cold to give myself a quick fix of warmth, enabling me to keep the central heating on low or off for longer, saving me energy that way.

Idea Of Energy Use & Oct 2022 £

Half hour on low 300W or 0.3kWh

@34p Oct 2022 rate cost 5p

An hour will be 10p.

Half hour on medium 600W or 0.6kWh

An hour will be 20p.

Half hour on high 1200W or 1.2kWh

An hour will be 40p.

Remember they are a directed heat source, so will work quickly and instantly.

A Thermometer, Smart Thermometer

These devices can be used effectively to keep track of the temperature of the room, and have been down to reduce energy use.
