Silent Night Heated Throw Saving £ Keeping Warm

Silent Night Heated Throw

I paid £40 for my Silent Night electric heated throw blanket & it's grey thermal & machine washable. One of the best things I've ever bought & a great way to save money.

I wrote to Silent Night to find out more about the amount of energy they use.

Silent Night informed me they use up to 100Watts or 0.1kW per hour.

At October 2022 Average electric *34p per kWh it costs about 1.1p per hour on Low.

They have 3 different settings so that is about 33Watts on low, 67Watts on medium & 100Watts on high.

I have been using it over November & December & rarely use the high setting because it makes me very very hot very very fast.

I have happily saved a lot of money over the last 2 months & will continue to save over the winter.

My suggestion is to think about also buying a plug in timer, because then you can easily set the their to come on/off as you required, so you could set it to come on in half hour intervals so through the night and then off in the morning. I suggest this because if you fall asleep with it on, then you won't wake up extremely hot like I did a couple of times.

I find the button is a little easy to accidentally switch on, & so a timer would help save you energy by ensuring it is only on when you require it's use.

With a maximum energy consumption of 100 Watts per hour and by using October 2022 average electric unit price of *34p per kWh this is approximately what the throw uses.

How Much Does Throw Cost To Run?

Low Setting

~33 Watts per hour

1 hour use ~33Watts ~1.1p per hour

5 hours use ~165Watts cost ~5.5p

10 hours uses ~330Watts cost ~11p

Medium Setting

~67 Watts per hour

1 hour uses ~67Watts ~2.28p per hour

5 hours use ~335Watts cost ~11.4p

10 hours uses ~670 Watts cost ~22.8p

High Setting

100 Watts per hour

1 hour uses 100Watts ~3.4p per hour

5 hours uses 0.5kW cost ~17p

10 hours uses 1 kW cost ~34p

*At Oct 2022 average electric rate of 34p per kWh. Prices vary please do check your energy bill for your actual current electric price per kWh.

To Calculate Your Own Cost

Find electric rate per kWh on energy bill

Then for example if it is 40p per kWh

Low Setting

1 hour use ~33Watts

You calculate cost by doing this

33W / 1000 = 0.033kW per hour

Then multiply by number of hours

0.033kW x 1 hr = 0.033kW per hr

0.033kW x 5 hr = 0.165kW per 5 hrs

0.033kW x 10 hr = 0.33kW per 10 hrs

To Calculate Cost

0.033kWh x 40p  = ~1.32p per hour

0.165kW/5hrs x 40p = ~6.6p per 5 hrs

0.33kW/10hrs x 40p = ~13.2p per 10 hrs

Then once you have the cost per hour you can simply multiply by the number of hours you will use the throw to work out the cost.

So ~1.32p x Number of Hours = Cost

Medium Setting

1 hour use ~67Watts

You calculate cost by doing this

67W / 1000 = 0.067kW per hour

Then multiply by number of hours

0.067kW x 1 hr = 0.067kW per hr

To Calculate Cost

0.067kWh x 40p = ~2.68p per hour

So ~2.68p x Number of Hours = Cost

Hope this is a help to you all.
