How Much Roughly Does A 9.5kW Electric Shower Cost To Use?

This is a question I answered online Sept 2022 and thought I would share it here, because others found my answer helpful.

It depends what your energy rate is per kWh? If your Electricity rate is 34p per kW/h (£0.34 per kW/h).

And 34p per kW/h is likely going to be the new electricity rate come 1st Oct 2022 for most people.

So, I am going to ignore the daily charge in these calculations and only consider what using a 9.5kWh electric shower uses.

If your shower uses 9.5kW/h (kW per hour), then an hour long shower uses 9.5kW of electricity.

If your Electricity costs 34p per kW then calculate this by doing this:

9.5kW/h x £0.34 = £3.23

Notice I have converted the 34p into £0.34

Therefore, a half hour or 30 minute shower divide £3.23 by 2 is £1.62

15 minute shower divide £3.23 by 4 is £0.81 or 81p

5 minute shower divide £3.23 by 12 is £0.27 or 27p

To work out per minute cost of shower take £3.23 and divide it by 60 is £0.058333 or just under 6p per minute.

If your Electricity rate increases to say 45p per kW/h (or £0.45)

Then your 9.5kW/h electric shower would cost

Cost 9.5kW/h x £0.45 = £4.275 per hour

Cost per minutes take £4.275 divide by 60 mins is £0.07125 or just over 7p per minute.

Hope these calculations help x
